Fotograaf Diego Schrans heeft een grote fascinatie voor de stad en het verhaal dat die te vertellen heeft. Zijn observaties gebeuren spontaan, niet gepland en treffend in de weergave van het alledaagse leven. De aanwezigheid van de mens is essentieel in het beeld en geeft een tweede laag. De foto’s van Diego zij meer dan momentopnames, het zijn vensters om het verhaal van de stad te ontdekken

Diego wandert …

De manier waarop Diego fotografie benadert, vertoont opmerkelijke parallellen met zijn functie als huisarts. Laagdrempelig, onvoorspelbaar en minimaal gebruik aan technische middelen. In beide disciplines wordt het verhaal opgebouwd door de context waarin het zich afspeelt. Een huisarts begrijpt dat de gezondheid van een individu wordt beïnvloed door levensstijl, omgeving en sociale omstandigheden. Op die manier begrijpt Diego dat de betekenis van een beeld wordt gevormd door de context waarin het zich bevindt. De mensen eromheen en de sfeer.

Biography

Diego Schrans was born and raised in Sint-Niklaas, a small provincial town in northern Belgium. From a young age, he developed a passion for science, technology, and human interactions, but his appreciation for the beauty of architecture and photography set him apart from his peers. These diverse interests led him to Ghent, where he studied medicine. During his studies, he discovered the art of photography using a second-hand Pentax reflex camera and got involved with the university’s photography class, where he mainly worked with black-and-white photography and set up his own darkroom at home.

After his studies, Diego established himself as a general practitioner, where he found the personal narratives of his patients particularly intriguing. The context of the person proved essential for a full understanding of the patient. This fascination with the story behind the visible led to a PhD titled: “How to capture the person behind the patient in bits and bytes”, where he sought to add context to patient records.

In 2018, Diego rekindled his passion for photography, swapped his iPhone for a Fuji x100F, and began experimenting again to enhance his creative skills. He also followed the offline course at “Het Objectief”, which further sharpened his photographic insights. Through the lens of his camera, he rediscovered the city and developed a unique style that highlights the intersections between general practice and street photography. Diego’s ability to capture the story through an understanding of the context remains a central theme in his work. He is currently still actively exploring new creative paths in photography.
